I've said it before and I'll say again. Quite frankly I'll never stop saying it. God is blowing me away. A few weeks ago my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Cassidy, reached out to me about a special kind of photoshoot and I was more than honored when she told me what she wanted to do for it.
A few years ago Mrs. Cassidy was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma cancer. She went in for treatment and it started going away. However, the cancer recently relapsed and she needed a bone marrow transplant. It turned out that her son, Carson, was a perfect match and now she is headed on her way to Atlanta to get ready for the transplant.
A part of the transplant meant she would be losing her hair, which was going to be a difficult and emotional process but she wanted to make the most of it. She told me that she was letting two of her closest friends help her get ready for this big transition and wanted to document it.
I was astounded by the joy in the room! Back when she was my teacher, I specifically remember Mrs. Cassidy making light of any situation in the classroom and this moment nearly 11 years later was no exception. There is something incredible about witnessing a community rally around their loved ones and seeing these friends cheer her on was a beautiful thing to experience.
It was cool getting to read about this experience! I hope all goes well with her surgery. Really good job on these, Emily. It's easy to lose focus on seeing photography as an opportunity to serve others and I think you hit on it well with this shoot.
